Signs of Change 2016
Ocean Art Works | 1531 Johnston Street

A selection of photographs from artist Nicole Dextras’ Ice Typography series. This series represents over 10 years of creating text-based sculptures made from ice, which speak to our present disconnect with the environment. It proposes a paradigm shift from our once undisputed ambition to tame nature, to a more respectful and low-impact approach to our ecosystem.
Each word was chosen to relate to its setting. For example, Consume was installed facing the upscale market of Coal Harbour in Vancouver, while Legacy was created on the Yukon River in a wilderness landscape. These everyday words placed within the context of the landscape are meant to provoke questions such as: what is the true cost of this View, who owns this Resource and what is your Legacy? For this exhibit, they are presented in a sequence that could be read as: Consume Local Truths and View the Resources that are your Legacy.
