It’s summer! Now that the kids are out of school, it’s the perfect time to regroup and explore a new place together as a family. Take the opportunity to visit Granville Island. This Vancouver hot spot juts out from the mainland into False Creek and has turned into a popular foodie, art, and entertainment locale. Here at Expedia Canada, we’re all about kid friendly activities, which is why we’ve partnered with Granville Island to bring you the top things to do with kids this summer on Granville Island.
If your little ones love to sing “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” every night, they’ll love an Aquabus tour. The small boat bobs along False Creek with a friendly guide who points out some of the major attractions of town. Spy landmarks such as Stamps Landing, Plaza of Nations, and Yaletown as you putter across the water. The boats are wheelchair and stroller friendly.
The biggest feature of Granville Island is its enormous Public Market, filled with heaps of fresh berries, jars of tea, and mountains of apples, pears, and mangos. That being said, there’s a whole special market just for kids and families before you get to the main building. The Kids Market is located near the entrance to Granville Island and features 25 stores with everything from toys and books to dress-up clothes. The kids’ area spreads out through a 100-year-old factory and a train caboose, with an outdoor patio where you can eat out in the sunshine on warm summer afternoons.
The Adventure Zone
Located inside the Kids Market, stretching up from the ground floor to the 2nd floor is the Adventure Zone, which features a multi-level jungle gym. Watch the kids slip down the slides, crash into the ball pit, and walk on the bouncy bridges. There’s also a mini carousel and game center on-site if you feel like challenging Johnny and Susie to an old fashioned round of arcade games. Perhaps if the kiddos win, you can even take them to Ribbit’s Candy Corner, which features a ton of classic sweets you haven’t seen since you were a kid.
Speaking of sweets, why not treat yourself while you’re rewarding the kids? Head to Rogers’ Chocolates. The store features a wide assortment of hand-wrapped chocolates, Victoria Creams, and gourmet chocolate bars. It’s an extra bit of luxury you more than deserve, and a perfect treat for the family to sample before walking along the shoreline.
As all Canadians know, Canada Day is one of the biggest holidays of the year, and when it comes to celebrations, it doesn’t get better than Granville Island. From 7 a.m. to midnight, the island features special events like a pancake breakfast, jazz concert, street festival, and parade. It’s a festival sure to dazzle the whole family.
This summer, put Granville Island on your calendar. From slides and chocolates to parades, it’s an experience the kids won’t soon forget.
