The Public Market’s 44th Anniversary!

Happy 44th birthday to the Granville Island Public Market!

On July 12, 1979, the Public Market opened it’s doors for the first time with 21 tenants. It was an immediate hit, quickly becoming an iconic Vancouver landmark for locals and visitors alike to gather, shop, eat and mingle.

The buildings themselves have a rich heritage dating back to Vancouver’s early days, the six buildings that make up the Public Market once housed companies that manufactured and sold equipment for the logging, mining and shipping industries. Much of the structural integrity of these buildings have been carefully retained to reflect the rich history and character of the island.

Today, the Public Market is home to more than 50 independent food purveyors and contributes to the Island’s appeal as a renowned culinary destination. We would like to shed light on six of the original tenants who remain in the market today: Longliner Seafoods, Dussa’s Ham and Cheese, Fraser Valley Juice and Salad Bar, Olde World Fudge, V&J Plant Shop and Lee’s Donuts!

Thank you to our tenants, old and new, for establishing a tight-knit community that has created a small town feel right in the heart of the city for the last 44 years.
