Volunteer for Canada Day on Granville Island (Sunday, July 1st)

This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in hospitality, tourism, performing arts, entertainment, event management, theatre arts and/or working with children.

Note: All volunteers must be 15 or older.

Please read the following job descriptions and select your top three choices below:

  • Bike Security Assistant - photograph identifying parts of bicycles for Garage 529, the community-based bike anti-theft registration and recovery service (some training required)
  • Cake Assistant - help serve cake after the public Canada Day ceremony at Ron Basford Park
  • Counter – count vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians at designated island entry points
  • Event/Workshop Assistant – help with events and/or workshops, such as bike decorating, arts and crafts, musical playground, etc. (May include setting up and taking down production elements for events, assisting at performances, helping performers, providing information to the public, managing crowds, helping with site parking, etc.)
  • Face Painting Assistant and/or Apprentice – help with face painting and/or crowd control at paint stations
  • Floater/Runner – based at Volunteer HQ, assist as needed and ready to do anything (Knowledge of Granville Island helpful)
  • Green Room Attendant - help Green Room Manager by checking in performers and artists, assisting with hospitality and keeping the Green Room clean and tidy
  • Green Team Member - assist the public in understanding Granville Island's Zero Waste policy
  • Information Ambassador - provide general and event-related information to the public; hand out Canada Day pins and flags (Need to know Granville Island, French an asset)
  • Parade Walker – walk in the parade, carrying puppets, helping participants such as stilt-walkers or assisting more generally on the parade route
  • Production Crew Member - help staff with set-up on Saturday 30 June and/or take down on the evening of 01 July
  • Roving Greeter - greet the public and provide information on the day's events as well as about Granville Island; hand out Canada Day pins and flags
  • Shift or Group Leader - serve as a leader to orient and supervise Counters, Greeters, Face Painters, Tattoo Station Attendants, Green Team members and other volunteers
  • Tattoo Station Attendant – hand out Canada Day temporary tattoos; assist with crowd control as well as tattoo station set-up and take down
  • Volunteer HQ Assistant – help the Volunteer Coordinator with meet and greet, signing in arriving volunteers, handing out T-shirts, dispatching volunteers to shift locations around Granville Island and signing out volunteers at the end of the day (HQ Assistants must know Granville Island well and preferably have volunteered for Canada Day before!)

Canada Day Availability

For training purposes, volunteers are invited to attend a one-hour orientation on Granville Island prior to the event.

Important: Please agree to the following if you are over the age of 18. If you are under the age of 18, have a legal guardian read the following, enter their name and accept on your behalf.

In consideration of being permitted to participate in Canada Day on Granville Island, I hereby release the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, its staff, sponsors, contractors, vendors, and agents from any claim arising from loss, damage, or injury, howsoever incurred, resulting from my or my child’s participation in or about the event.

I agree with the above terms stated in the Liability Waiver and Release.
